Port Of LA Fends Off 40 Million Cyber Attacks Each Month: Director

Authored by Jill McLaughlin via The Epoch Times,

The number of cyber intrusions directed at the Port of Los Angeles has doubled since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, reaching 40 million each month, according to Executive Director Gene Seroka.

Intelligence shows the threats are coming from Russia and parts of Europe, Seroka told BBC July 22.

“We have to stay steps ahead of those who want to hurt international commerce,” he said.

The cyber intrusions include phishing, malware, and other attempts to breach the port’s systems.

“The past two years have proven the vital role that ports hold to our nation’s critical infrastructure, supply chains and economy. It’s paramount we keep the systems as secure as possible,” Seroka said.

In response to the increase in cyber threats, the port launched a first-of-its-kind Cyber Resilience Center in January to improve readiness. The system is operated by International Business Machines (IBM) to allow the port and outside companies involved in the supply chain to collect and share signs of threats with each other automatically.

“We’ve gone from the cybersecurity Operations Center to a Cyber Resilience Center, which for the first time brings the private sector in under the FBI’s [cyber watch] program,” Seroka told Bloomberg in March.

“If someone gets impacted, they can share that data and we can synthesize it across the port community. We’ve got to now scale that nationwide.”

None of the cyber attacks have succeeded, Port of Los Angeles spokesman Phillip Sanfield told The Epoch Times.

The twin ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach continue to sort through container backups following a deluge of imports during the pandemic. The ports remain the busiest seaports in the Western Hemisphere, processing about 40 percent of seaborne imports and 22 percent of seaborne exports nationwide each year.

At its peak, a record 109 ships waited to offload cargo at the port complex in January. That number had dropped sharply to only 21 ships July 29, according to the Marine Exchange of Southern California.

The port expects imports to remain strong as deliveries of back-to-school items, fall fashions, and holiday goods start to arrive during the second half of this year, according to Seroka.

“Even though some retailers have high inventories and may look to discount goods, I expect imports to remain strong though tapered, versus last year,” Seroka said July 13.

“We Are Not Tacos”: Hispanic Association Slams Jill Biden For Comparing Latinos To ‘Breakfast Tacos’

“We Are Not Tacos”: Hispanic Association Slams Jill Biden For Comparing Latinos To ‘Breakfast Tacos’

Hispanics are livid after First Lady Jill Biden compared them to “breakfast tacos” during a Monday speech to the 2022 UnidosUS Annual Conference held in Texas, where she opined on Hispanics’ “Quest for Equity.”

During her speech, Biden said that “the diversity of this community, as distinct as the bodegas of the Bronx, as beautiful as the blossoms of Miami and as unique as the breakfast tacos here in San Antonio, is your strength.”

This did not sit well with Latinos, who spent the day dragging her on Twitter. It also caught the attention of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ), which said in a statement: “We are not tacos.”

“Using breakfast tacos to try to demonstrate the uniqueness of Latinos in San Antonio demonstrates a lack of cultural knowledge and sensitivity to the diversity of Latinos in the region,” reads the statement.

“Our heritage as Latinos is shaped by a variety of diasporas, cultures and food traditions, and should not be reduced to a stereotype.”

Memes and hot takes abound:

Army General Suspended Over Tweet To Jill Biden: “Glad You Finally Know What A Woman Is”

Army General Suspended Over Tweet To Jill Biden: “Glad You Finally Know What A Woman Is”

A three-star general had his military contract suspended and is now being investigated over a tweet sent to first lady Jill Biden which appeared to mock her and the administration in the wake of the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

Retired Lt. Gen. Gary Volesky is the Army’s former top spokesman, but while in retirement he recently signed a contract with the Army to command the Combined Arms Center and advise active duty officers. He’s being investigated for the below now-deleted tweet:

“For nearly 50 years, women have had the right to make our own decisions about our bodies. Today, that right was stolen from us,” Jill Biden’s initial tweet said. Gen. Volesky responded using his personal Twitter account, “Glad to see you finally know what a woman is.”

The tweet was sent on June 24, and Volesky later deleted it without explanation or apology, with USA Today revealing the investigation for the first time Saturday.

“A retired three-star general has been suspended from a $92-an-hour contract consulting the Army and is under investigation after posting a tweet that appeared to mock first lady Jill Biden on a hot-button social issue, according to the Army,” the report said.

The incident, given it involved a high ranking general on social media, is relatively rare for the Pentagon given senior commanders aren’t supposed to get “political”.

However, Gen. Volesky, who previously also commanded the Army’s 101st Airborne Division, was referencing what’s become a meme highlighting the utter inconsistency of the Left and its inability to maintain basic definitions of reality. It goes back to the March Congressional hearing when Biden’s US Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson was asked by Sen. Marsha Blackburn to simply define the word “woman.”

Jackson’s absurd response while refusing to acknowledge what a woman is, was to say “I’m not a biologist”

Meanwhile, we hardly have to remind readers how frequently generals and high-ranking government officials mocked and/or criticized the Trump presidency when he was in office.

California Border Patrol Finds 27 Pounds Of Meth In Booster Seat

The suspect, a U.S. citizen, was driving on Interstate 15, north of a Border Patrol station, on June 15.

“Drug smugglers will use any means necessary to get their poison onto our streets. Nothing is sacred to them, not even family,” Aaron M. Heitke, Chief Patrol Agent at the San Diego Sector said in a release.

A man was driving with his wife and four of their children when agents stopped the car. A K9 team was dispatched and located the narcotics in three booster seats inside the car. Several packages were found containing methamphetamine, U.S. Border Patrol reported.

The estimated street value is $60,000, agents said.

Agents turned the driver over to the Inland Crackdown Allied Taskforce for prosecution. The vehicle was seized by Border Patrol. The four children and their mother were released.
