There’s an old perpetual motion money machine in D.C. And it goes something like this. Politicians raise money to run for office. And they run for office to raise money. Anyone who’s been around the block a few times remembers ‘candidates’ with no serious plan or a credible candidacy, but took off on social media and raised millions (or even more) and wasted them on a bid with no other purpose than to raise money.
(And if you’ve also been around the block or read The Point regularly, you know some of the tricks politicians can use to turn campaign donations into cold hard cash.)
So that brings us to AOC and her nearly $10 million.
AOC raised nearly $10 million in the first quarter of 2025—a haul in line with some presidential candidates.
That’s a whole lot of money for a congresswoman in a non-competitive lefty district who couldn’t lose an election.
