The U.K.’s Competition and Markets Authority said it is investigating whether the partnership between Microsoft and OpenAI will impact market competition.
The regulator said Friday that it is inviting interested parties to comment on whether the partnership between Microsoft and OpenAI has resulted in a relevant merger situation and its potential impact on competition in the U.K.
The invitation is the first part of CMA’s process to gather information, and comes in advance of any launch of a formal investigation.
The CMA said it will review whether the partnership has resulted in an acquisition of control, which is a situation where one party has material influence, de facto control or more than 50% of the voting rights over another entity.
Microsoft said it will work closely with the CMA to provide all the information it needs.
