The Mets made a small addition to their bullpen Thursday with the signing of right-hander Austin Adams, who appeared in 24 games for Arizona last season before he suffered a fractured right ankle after being drilled by a Joc Pederson comebacker on Aug. 1.
The 32-year-old signed a non-guaranteed contract and will look to join a relief corps that struggled without the injured Edwin Diaz last season.
Adams threw just 17 ¹/₃ innings for Arizona before the ankle injury and was limited to just two appearances with the Padres in 2022, when he dealt with a strained flexor tendon.
And in 2021, Adams set some unwanted major league history, as he became the first pitcher to hit more than 20 batters in less than 50 innings in a season.
Still, he’s had success in getting swings and misses, as well as limiting hard contact through a major league career that’s spanned parts of seven seasons and included stops with Washington and Seattle.
The Mets also announced the hiring of Eduardo Brizuela as vice president and special assistant to the president of baseball operations.
