The Mets’ push for one of the National League’s wild-card spots took a major hit Saturday, when manager Carlos Mendoza announced that Jeff McNeil will “likely” miss the rest of the season with a fractured wrist.
McNeil underwent an MRI exam on Saturday after exiting the Mets’ extra-inning win Friday with a right wrist contusion.
He was hit on the wrist with a curveball in the fifth inning after flashing a bunt.
Despite initially remaining in the game, McNeil was eventually replaced by Jose Iglesias in the field — and Harrison Bader at the plate as a pinch-hitter —one inning later.
McNeil, who won the NL batting title two years ago, has hit .238 through 129 games this season, though his role has fluctuated at times given his struggles and Iglesias’ emergence.
Now, the Mets will need to find someone to fill her versatile role altogether
