A long-coming appeal to the conviction of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin for the officer-involved death of George Floyd has come with the legal team representing Chauvin bringing forward evidence that reportedly was not seen by the original court.
According to The Associated Press, Chauvin who was convicted for murder and violation of civil rights in 2021 after an ill-fated arrest attempt in 2020 resulted in Floyd’s death, has said in the court filing that the evidence proves he did not commit murder.
Chauvin, currently serving a 21-year sentence at Florence Maximum Security Prison in Arizona filed the appeal without the assistance of a lawyer and claims that Dr. William Schaetzel, of Topeka, Kansas has told him he believes Floyd did not die from asphyxia due to the then-police officer’s actions. Rather, he perished due to a rate form of tumor known as a paraganglioma which can cause a fatal surge of adrenaline. Schaetzel, a pathologist did not physically examine Floyd but reviewed autopsy reports per the AP.
Schaetzel told reporters, “I can’t go to my grave with what I know,” he added, “I just want the truth.”
